1.3.34
Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.3.34
न क्रिया स्यादिति चेदर्थान्तरे विधानं न द्रव्यमिति चेत्
na kriyā syād iti cedarthāntare vidhānaṃ na dravyam iti cet
The line
If you say the action would fail, that another thing is enjoined, and that the word would not be a substance, those objections are still to be met.
नेपालीमा
यदि कर्म असफल हुन्छ, अर्को कुरा विधिले तोकिन्छ, र शब्द द्रव्य हुँदैन भन्छौ भने, ती आक्षेपको उत्तर अझै बाँकी छ।
Where it sits
The three objections restate 1.3.30's worry about action, 1.3.32's another, and 1.3.31's substance, now against the decision of 1.3.33. iti cet marks them as objections. Nothing in the line is the answer.
Split: na (न) + kriyā (क्रिया) + syāt (स्यात्) + iti (इति) + cet (चेत्) + artha-antare (अर्थ-अन्तरे) + vidhānam (विधानम्) + na (न) + dravyam (द्रव्यम्) + iti (इति) + cet (चेत्)

The phrases
If you say the action would not exist: he sprinkles the rice. Sprinkling cannot be done to a bare class-form.
There is also an injunction about another thing. If the dedicated animal runs, he takes another of that color and age. One form seems to leave no other.
If you say it is not a substance: six are to be given, twelve, twenty-four. Those numbers need substances. The line gathers these objections. The answer is the next line.
Sanskrit in this line
syāt (स्यात्) before iti is heard as syād (स्याद्), and the first cet before arthāntare (अर्थान्तरे) is heard as cedar. The two iti cet pairs keep the objections in one line. arthāntare (अर्थान्तरे) vidhānam (विधानम्) is the substitute sentence, not a new rite.
Say it back
List the three objections in order: sprinkling the rice, the substitute animal, and the numbered gifts.

1.3.35. The performance aims at the bearer of the form, so the word's use does not split.
