बुभुत्सोर् यदि चान्यत्र प्रत्यगात्मन इष्यते अप्राणो ह्यमनाः शुभ्र इति चानर्थकं वचः
bubhutsor yadi cānyatra pratyagātmana iṣyate aprāṇo hy amanāḥ śubhra iti cānarthakaṃ vacaḥ
The line
If, for the one who wants to know, the object is sought anywhere other than the inward self, then the sentence 'indeed without breath, without mind, bright' is a speech with no point.
नेपालीमा
जान्न चाहनेका लागि विषय भित्री आत्माभन्दा अर्कैतिर खोजियो भने साँच्चै प्राण बिना, मन बिना, उज्यालो भन्ने वाक्य तात्पर्य नभएको बोली हुन्छ।
Where it sits
This closes īśvaraprakaraṇam (ईश्वरप्रकरणम्). Four verses. The Lord is the self. The negations remove a false overlay, and they are not a discourse on emptiness. The sentence of scripture points inward. The later prakaraṇas (प्रकरण) of the metrical half are not in this pāṭha (पाठ) yet.
Split: bubhutsoḥ (बुभुत्सोः) + yadi (यदि) + ca (च) + anyatra (अन्यत्र) + pratyag-ātmanaḥ (प्रत्यग्-आत्मनः) + iṣyate (इष्यते) + aprāṇaḥ (अप्राणः) + hi (हि) + amanāḥ (अमनाः) + śubhraḥ (शुभ्रः) + iti (इति) + ca (च) + anarthakam (अनर्थकम्) + vacaḥ (वचः)
Sanskrit, in depth

|---|---|---|
| bubhutsoḥ (बुभुत्सोः) | genitive singular, masculine | of the bubhutsu (बुभुत्सु), the one who desires to know. A desiderative noun from budh (बुध्), to wake, to know. Written bubhutsor (बुभुत्सोर्) before y (य्). |
| yadi (यदि) | indeclinable | if. |
| ca (च) | indeclinable | and. |
| anyatra (अन्यत्र) | indeclinable | elsewhere. |
| pratyag-ātmanaḥ (प्रत्यग्-आत्मनः) | ablative singular, masculine | than the inward self. anyatra (अन्यत्र) plus the ablative is 'elsewhere than.' |

| aprāṇaḥ (अप्राणः) | nominative singular, masculine | without prāṇa (प्राण), without breath. |

The phrases
The search has an address. It is the pratyagātman (प्रत्यगात्मन्), not a place elsewhere. The Upaniṣad (उपनिषद्) sentence aprāṇo hy amanāḥ śubhraḥ (अप्राणो ह्यमनाः शुभ्रः), from the Muṇḍaka (मुण्डक), says the self is without breath and without mind, and bright. If the student were looking for something other than the inward self, that sentence would have nothing to point at.
anarthakam (अनर्थकम्) is the verdict on the sentence under the wrong search. The sentence is not pointless when the search is inward.
Sanskrit in this line
bubhutsu (बुभुत्सु) is a desiderative: wanting to budh (बुध्). The genitive is the person whose search is being located. anyatra (अन्यत्र) with an ablative is 'elsewhere than' that ablative.
Say it back
Where is the search, and which sentence would be pointless if the search were somewhere else?
