Upadeśasāhasrī / 2. Pratiṣedha (प्रतिषेध)

2. Pratiṣedha (प्रतिषेध)

Summary

Prakaraṇa (प्रकरण) 2 is the negation. What remains to be said of the self is not this, not this. The negation removes a false overlay. It is not a list of properties the self happens to lack.

What remains is neti neti (नेति नेति), not this, not this.

Line
pratiṣeddhum aśakyatvān neti netīti śeṣitam / idaṃ nāham idaṃ nāham ity addhā pratipadyate
Because the self cannot be negated, what is left is 'not this, not this.' One understands, for certain, 'I am not this, I am not this.'
idaṃdhīr idamātmotthā vācārambhaṇagocarā / niṣiddhātmodbhavatvāt sā na punar mānatāṃ vrajet
The 'this'-thought, risen from taking the self to be a this, has speech-modification as its range. Because its arising as the self has been negated, it should not become a means of knowing again.
A later notion does not arise without having sublated the earlier one. The seer is one, and established by himself. He is not sublated, because a cognition is a fruit.
idaṃvanam atikramya śokamohādidūṣitam / vanād gāndhārako yadvat svam ātmānaṃ prapadyate
Having crossed the forest of 'this,' which is spoiled by grief, delusion, and the rest, one reaches one's own self, as the man of Gandhāra (गन्धार) reaches home from the forest.
