pramāṇaṃ veda evātra jñānasyādhigame smṛtaḥ

नेपालीमा
यहाँ त्यो ज्ञान पाउन वेद मात्र साधन भनिएको छ।
Where it sits
17.7 has said that this attainment comes by knowledge. 17.8 names the means. 17.9 says the oneness of the self is what is to be known, from grasping the meaning of the sentence.
Split: pramāṇam (प्रमाणम्) + vedaḥ (वेदः) + eva (एव) + atra (अत्र) + jñānasya (ज्ञानस्य) + adhigame (अधिगमे) + smṛtaḥ (स्मृतः)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| pramāṇam (प्रमाणम्) | nominative singular, neuter | a means of knowing |
| vedaḥ (वेदः) | nominative singular, masculine | the Veda. Before eva (एव) the line writes veda (वेद). |
| eva (एव) | indeclinable | alone |
| atra (अत्र) | indeclinable | here. In this teaching. eva (एव) + atra (अत्र) is evātra (एवात्र). |
| jñānasya (ज्ञानस्य) | genitive singular, neuter | of the knowing |
| adhigame (अधिगमे) | locative singular, masculine | in the attainment. adhigama (अधिगम) is the arriving at it. The line joins jñānasya (ज्ञानस्य) + adhigame (अधिगमे) as jñānasyādhigame (ज्ञानस्याधिगमे). |
| smṛtaḥ (स्मृतः) | nominative singular, masculine | declared, remembered as such. The participle smṛta (स्मृत). It agrees with vedaḥ (वेदः). It is not the noun smṛti (स्मृति), memory. |
The phrases
veda eva (वेद एव) is the subject, and eva (एव) tightens it to the Veda alone. pramāṇam (प्रमाणम्) is what it is declared to be. smṛtaḥ (स्मृतः) says this is the record of the teaching.
atra (अत्र) and the locative keep the claim inside this knowledge. A pot is still known by the eye. The next verse says the oneness of the self is known from the meaning of the sentence.
Sanskrit in this line
vedaḥ (वेदः) + eva (एव) is recited veda eva (वेद एव). Visarga drops before a vowel. eva (एव) + atra (अत्र) lengthens: a (अ) + a (अ) = ā (आ). jñānasya (ज्ञानस्य) + adhigame (अधिगमे) is jñānasyādhigame (ज्ञानस्याधिगमे) by the same rule. smṛtaḥ (स्मृतः) is masculine, matching vedaḥ (वेदः).
Say it back
Say what eva (एव) restricts, and which knowing the locative is about.
