The story
Celebrated on the eighth day of the waxing lunar fortnight of Chaitra (Caitra Śukla Ashtami), Chaite Dashain—classically known as the Vāsanta Navaratri—marks the sacred spring manifestation of the nine-night festival of Goddess Durga Bhavānī. Occurring precisely six months opposite the grand autumnal festival of Bada Dashain in Ashoj, this vernal observance completes the cosmological balance of the year: while autumn celebrates the triumph of light at the threshold of winter cold, spring honors the triumphant awakening of life, blooming crops, and creative cosmic energy as the winter frost recedes before the approaching new year.
In epic lore, Chaite Dashain commemorates the decisive spiritual intervention that preceded the fall of Lankā. On the eve of his cosmic confrontation with the demon king Rāvaṇa, Lord Sri Rama paused to perform intensive austerities, invoking the unyielding warrior shakti of Goddess Caṇḍī. Graced by the Mother's cosmic benediction, the solar prince secured divine weapons and inner fortitude, slaying the ten-headed titan on the following afternoon—a victory celebrated synchronically on the very next dawn as Rama Navami. Consequently, the festival weaves the fierce protective grace of the Mother Goddess directly into the righteous victory of Lord Rama, harmonizing Vaiṣṇava ethics with Śākta cosmic power.
Across Nepal, devotees assemble at dawn to visit ancient martial sanctums and hillfort armories (Kot), offering worship at premier Śakti sanctuaries including Guhyeśvarī, Śobhā Bhagavatī, and Dakṣiṇkālī in the Kathmandu Valley, as well as the historic Baglung Kālīkā temple and Gorkha Durbar. Priests recite the resonant hymns of the Devi Māhātmya, performing traditional animal and melon sacrifices, while elders apply crimson vermilion tīkā and fresh spring barley shoots to family members, imparting courage and vitality before the turn of the Bikram Sambat calendar in Baisakh.
The day
Chaite Dashain is celebrated as a cherished domestic and temple holiday across the hills and valleys. Families gather at home to receive the red tika from household elders, while major state military sacrifices and martial gun salutes are performed at the historic Kot courtyards of Hanuman Dhoka and Gorkha. On the very next morning, the temple bells ring out to welcome Rama Navami, the high-noon advent of Lord Rama.

चैत महिनाको शुक्ल पक्षको अष्टमी तिथिका दिन मनाइने चैते दशैं सनातन परम्परामा 'वासन्त नवरात्र' को सबैभन्दा महत्वपूर्ण दिन हो। असोज महिनाको बडा दशैंजस्तै गरी वर्षमा दुई पटक पर्ने नवरात्रमध्ये यो वसन्त ऋतुको नवरात्र हो। आश्विनको दशैंले वर्षायामको अन्त्य र हिउँदको आगमनको सङ्केत गर्दछ भने, चैते दशैंले हिउँदको चिसो समाप्त भई प्रकृतिको नयाँ पालुवा, न्यानोपन, र नयाँ वर्षको शुभ आगमनको सन्देश दिन्छ।
धार्मिक तथा पौराणिक मान्यताअनुसार रावणसँगको निर्णायक युद्धमा विजयी हुनका लागि मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम भगवान् श्रीरामले चैत्र नवरात्रमा भगवती चण्डीको कठोर साधना गर्नुभएको थियो। देवीको वरदान पाएर शक्तिसम्पन्न हुनुभएका श्रीरामले भोलिपल्ट अर्थात् नवमी तिथिका दिन रावणमाथि विजय प्राप्त गर्नुभएको हुनाले, चैते दशैंलाई रामको विजयोत्सवको पूर्वतयारीका रूपमा पनि लिइन्छ। यसै कारणले चैते दशैंको भोलिपल्ट राम नवमीको महान् जन्मोत्सव मनाइन्छ।
यस दिन देशभरका प्रमुख शक्तिपीठहरू—काठमाडौँका गुह्येश्वरी, शोभा भगवती, भद्रकाली, नक्साल भगवती, दक्षिणकाली तथा गोरखा दरबारको कालिका मन्दिर र बागलुङ कालिकामा बिहानैदेखि श्रद्धालु भक्तजनहरूको ठूलो भीड लाग्दछ। मन्दिरहरूमा दुर्गा सप्तशती (चण्डी) को पाठ गरिन्छ। घरघरमा पनि बिहानै पूजाआजा गरी कुलदेवतालाई नयाँ जौको जमरा र रातो टीका अर्पण गरिन्छ। त्यसपछि परिवारका सदस्यहरूले मान्यजनको हातबाट रातो टीका र जमरा लगाई आशीर्वाद ग्रहण गर्दछन्। यसै महिनामा काठमाडौँमा सेतो मच्छिन्द्रनाथको रथयात्रा र टुँडिखेलमा घोडेजात्राको रौनक पनि छाउँदछ।
