tasmād ajñānahānāya saṃsāravinivṛttaye brahmavidyāvidhānāya prārabdhopaniṣat tv iyam

The line

Therefore this Upaniṣad (उपनिषद्) has been begun, for the destruction of ignorance, for the ending of saṃsāra (संसार), and for the establishment of the knowledge of Brahman (ब्रह्मन्).

नेपालीमा

यसैले यो उपनिषद् अज्ञान नाश गर्न, संसार अन्त्य गर्न, र ब्रह्मको ज्ञान स्थापना गर्न सुरु गरिएको हो।

Where it sits

Prakaraṇa (प्रकरण) 1 has done its work: the wheel, the root, the refusal of karma (कर्म) as a helper, neti neti (नेति नेति), and the book pointed at. Verse 26, the last of the prakaraṇa (प्रकरण), is a grammatical derivation of the word upaniṣad (उपनिषद्). Prakaraṇa (प्रकरण) 2 will stay inside neti neti (नेति नेति).

Split: tasmāt (तस्मात्) + ajñāna-hānāya (अज्ञान-हानाय) + saṃsāra-vinivṛttaye (संसार-विनिवृत्तये) + brahma-vidyā-vidhānāya (ब्रह्म-विद्या-विधानाय) + prārabdhā (प्रारब्धा) + upaniṣat (उपनिषत्) + tu (तु) + iyam (इयम्)

The phrases

Three datives, three purposes, one book. iyam upaniṣat (इयमुपनिषत्) is prārabdhā (प्रारब्धा) for all three. The purposes restate verses 5 and 7: remove ignorance, end the round, set down brahmavidyā (ब्रह्मविद्या).

tu (तु) does not answer an objection here. It sets this text in front of you as the text that was begun.

Sanskrit in this line

Three datives in a row are three 'for's, all depending on prārabdhā (प्रारब्धा). The nominative of the consonant stem upaniṣad (उपनिषद्) is upaniṣat (उपनिषत्).

Say it back

Three purposes. Say them, and say what was begun.

1.26. Upaniṣad (उपनिषद्) comes from the root sad, preceded by upa and ni, with the suffix kvip. And from the weakening, and from the cutting away of the womb and the rest.
