25.5

Mūlamadhyamakakārikā / 25. Nirvāṇa (निर्वाण) / 25.5

भावश् च यदि निर्वाणं निर्वाणं संस्कृतं भवेत् नासंस्कृतो हि विद्यते भावः क्व चन कश् चन

bhāvaś ca yadi nirvāṇaṃ nirvāṇaṃ saṃskṛtaṃ bhavet nāsaṃskṛto hi vidyate bhāvaḥ kva cana kaś cana

The line

And if nirvāṇa (निर्वाण) were an existent, nirvāṇa (निर्वाण) would be conditioned. For no existent at all, anywhere, is found unconditioned.

नेपालीमा

यदि निर्वाण भएको चीज हुन्थ्यो भने निर्वाण संस्कृत हुन्थ्यो। कतै पनि कुनै भएको चीज असंस्कृत पाइँदैन।

Where it sits

25.4 used aging and death. 25.5 uses saṃskṛta (संस्कृत). 25.6 adds that a bhāva (भाव) is not found without appropriation, upādāna (उपादान).

Split: bhāvaḥ (भावः) + ca (च) + yadi (यदि) + nirvāṇam (निर्वाणम्) + nirvāṇam (निर्वाणम्) + saṃskṛtam (संस्कृतम्) + bhavet (भवेत्) + na (न) + asaṃskṛtaḥ (असंस्कृतः) + hi (हि) + vidyate (विद्यते) + bhāvaḥ (भावः) + kva (क्व) + cana (चन) + kaḥ (कः) + cana (चन)

The phrases

A bhāva (भाव) is saṃskṛta (संस्कृत). That is the rule of the second line, with no exception, kva cana kaś cana (क्व चन कश् चन). So a nirvāṇa (निर्वाण) that was a bhāva (भाव) would be conditioned. nirvāṇa (निर्वाण) is not taught as conditioned.

The repetition of nirvāṇam (निर्वाणम्) puts the consequence on the same word.

Sanskrit in this line

kva cana (क्व चन) and kaś cana (कश् चन) are the same pair as in 1.1, anywhere and any. The rule is meant to have no gap.

25.6. And if nirvāṇa (निर्वाण) were an existent, how is that nirvāṇa (निर्वाण) not dependent on appropriation? No existent is found that is not dependent on appropriation.
