Queen Aishwarya Rajya Lakshmi Devi Shah was born on 7 November 1949 at Lazimpat Durbar, and she died on 1 June 2001 at Narayanhiti. She wrote poems and songs as Chadani Shah, also spelled Chandani Shah (चाँदनी शाह). She was queen from 31 January 1972, the day King Mahendra (महेन्द्र) died, until her own death. This page names the books and the songs. The lines stay in the books and the recordings, because the poems are still under copyright, which means the right to copy them still belongs with her family.

The books

Her poems were gathered as Aphnai Akash Aphnai Paribesh (आफ्नै आकाश आफ्नै परिवेश), which means one's own sky and one's own surroundings, and the book opens with an essay by a critic. In 1986 the government printed a booklet of 37 pages, Kavayitri Chandani Shahka Rachana (कवयित्री चाँदनी शाहका रचना), "The works of the poet Chandani Shah," from the Ministry of Communications, Department of Information. The public book lists spell that name Chandani. In 1987 a short book of 49 pages, Chadani Shah's Poems, came out in Kathmandu with the Nepali and the English on opposite pages. Bandana Shrestha made the English, and Indira Shrestha published the book. The University of Pennsylvania library catalogue is the check for that 1987 book, and the 1986 booklet is the one the public book lists carry. The lines stay there.

The songs

Songs credited to her were sung by Tara Devi, with music by Natikaji, and they were played on Radio Nepal and Nepal Television. Titles that go around under her name include Timile Diyeka Mayalu Koseli, Aanshu ra Suskeraka Bacha, and Yeti Thulo Sansar Ma. Those are public credits, the names a broadcast listing gives the writer. This page has not opened a studio log, so the credits stay credits.

School, the marriage, the palace

She went to St Helen's Convent in Kurseong, then to St Mary's in Jawalakhel. She passed the School Leaving Certificate, the last school exam of that time, in 1963 at Kanti Ishwari Rajya Laxmi High School, and in 1967 she took an arts degree at Padmakanya College. Banira Giri (वानीरा गिरी) was born in Kurseong. Aishwarya went to school there. They are different lives in the same town. In 1970 she married Crown Prince Birendra, her second cousin, the child of a parent's cousin. Her father was General Kendra Shumsher Jang Bahadur Rana, and her mother was Shree Rajya Lakshmi Devi Shah. Her sisters were Queen Komal and Princess Prekshya. Her children were Dipendra, Shruti, and Nirajan.

On 1 June 2001 she was killed at the palace with King Birendra and two of their children, Shruti and Nirajan. Dipendra died on 4 June 2001. That is the whole of it on this page.

What to carry out of the room

Carry Chadani Shah as the name on the poems. Carry Aphnai Akash Aphnai Paribesh as the collection, and the 1986 booklet and the 1987 facing translation as the printed trail. Carry the songs as credits. The lines stay in the recordings. Carry the crown as the reason the work was printed and sung. This shelf is a line of books chosen because the writing changed the language, and these poems sit here with that reason said plainly.

Where it sits

The page before this one is Banira Giri (वानीरा गिरी). King Mahendra (महेन्द्र) is earlier in the book, between Bhupi Sherchan and Prema Shah. His death on 31 January 1972 is the day she became queen.
